This year's theme is "The Impressionists"

The Impressionists were fascinated by light and colour. They captured the mood of a moment and found beauty in the fleeting and ever-changing. As realists, they painted what they saw rather than a staged reality. They often painted the same subject again and again in order to capture the changing effects of light and colour.

They painted outdoors (en plein air) and used loose, spontaneous brushstrokes that left room for the viewer's own interpretation. Their work was filled with optimism and avoided dark colours such as black and deep brown. Instead, their palette was made up of the colours of the rainbow, with shadows created using complementary colours.

In many ways, their approach to painting reminds me of my own approach to dyeing yarn. 💛

Over the 24 days of the Christmas Calendar, we will explore works such as Monet's Water Lilies, Degas' ballet dancers, and Renoir's Le Moulin de la Galette, as well as a number of lesser-known masterpieces.

The Vildspire Christmas Calendar contains 24 individually wrapped parcels, each holding 20 g of beautiful naturally dyed yarn. Every skein is dyed on soft organic merino wool and inspired by the Impressionists' stunning paintings.
